| Portable Arc Welding is the Stick welding (Shielded Metal Arc) process using a Portable Gas powered or Diesel powered welding generator. The stick (electrode) is consumed in an arc between the electrode and the workpiece. As the weld bead forms, the stick contributes molten metal to the weld puddle. Eventually, the electrode has to be replaced. To preserve the integrity of the weld, the electrode is coated with a flux that vaporizes to form a protective atmosphere around the arc. The flux forms a slag blanket which must be removed after the weld has cooled. Stick is a relatively slower process that requires a moderately high level of skill.
